The Olympic Torch at Parkes Observatory - 18 August 2000.

The Mayor of Parkes, Robert Wilson, had the honour of bearing the Olympic Torch atop the Parkes Radio Telescope.

Representatives of the Australian National Media were present to cover the historic event. They included Channel 7, Channel 9, Channel 10, as well as members of the national press from News Corporation, Fairfax and "The Parkes Champion Post". Radio 2UE and other regional radio were also present.

A large number of the public were at hand to witness the Olympic Torch lofted skyward by the famous Parkes Radio Telescope. Many in the crowd, spontaneously began singing the Australian National Anthem and other patriotic songs. A very enjoyable and memorable time was had by all.

What a great Event !



Meanwhile, earlier in the day...
All is ready in anticipation of the arrival of the Olympic Torch to the Parkes Radio Observatory.
